Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose Dale Driver Training?
I’m a fully qualified, DVSA-approved driving instructor with a background in coaching. My lessons are calm, friendly and tailored to how you learn.
We can use clear explanations, diagrams and demonstrations, revisit something that needs more practice or move forward when you’re ready. There’s room to ask questions and learn from mistakes without feeling judged.
We’ll track your progress together and agree what comes next. Everyone is welcome—I offer an inclusive, LGBTQ+ friendly learning environment.
Do you teach manual or automatic?
I offer manual driving lessons in my MINI Countryman. We’ll build your confidence with clutch control and changing gears at your pace, until they feel natural.
Can you help if I’m nervous about learning to drive?
Absolutely. It’s normal to feel nervous, whether you’re starting from scratch or returning after a break.
My approach is calm, patient and encouraging. We’ll talk through any worries, break things into manageable steps and work at a pace that suits you. You can always ask questions, revisit something or let me know when you need a moment.
Which areas do you cover?
I provide lessons across Edinburgh South and surrounding areas, including Gilmerton, Liberton, Newington, Morningside, Fairmilehead, Oxgangs and Colinton.
I also cover Musselburgh, Portobello, Danderhall, Shawfair, Millerhill, Loanhead, Dalkeith, Bonnyrigg and Newtongrange.
Include your postcode when you enquire so I can confirm whether I cover your pickup location and discuss availability.
When should I book my theory and driving tests?
I encourage you to start studying for your theory early alongside your lessons, and take it when you’re prepared. I can offer guidance, but regular revision is something you’ll need to make time for yourself.
You must pass your theory before booking your practical test. Discuss your readiness and my availability with me before choosing a date.
New practical test appointments are currently released at 6am on Mondays, 24 weeks ahead. Earlier appointments can appear during the week, but availability varies. You must book and manage your own test through GOV.UK.
If your progress means a different date would suit you better, we can discuss your options. Always check with me before changing your booking.
How long will it take me to pass?
Everyone learns at a different pace. Your starting experience, confidence, lesson frequency and opportunities to practise all affect how long it takes.
Regular lessons, preparation and reflecting on feedback help you make steady progress. We’ll review how you’re getting on together, so you know what’s going well and what still needs work. You won’t be rushed or judged against anyone else’s timeline.
Can I use your car for my driving test?
Yes—my car is available to my existing learners, subject to availability, test readiness and my terms and conditions. I don’t offer test-day car hire to people I haven’t taught.
You’ll need to demonstrate safe, consistent driving and pass mock tests. You must also attend a two-hour lesson each week during the four to six weeks before your test, including if you’ve taken an agreed break after becoming test-ready.
Meeting the lesson requirement alone doesn’t guarantee use of the car: I must also be confident you’re ready to drive independently.
How will we track my progress?
We use the Total Drive app to record your progress and keep everything in one place.
After each lesson, we both contribute to a reflective log covering what we worked on, what went well and what needs more practice. We also agree the focus for your next lesson.
This gives you a clear picture of your development and helps us assess your readiness for a driving test alongside your driving and mock-test results.
Will we practise on roads around my test centre?
Yes. I know the local area well and primarily prepare learners for Musselburgh test centre, with Currie also covered.
As you progress, we’ll practise challenging junctions, roundabouts and road layouts around your chosen centre. I’ll help you understand what to look for and how to approach them confidently.
The aim is to develop skills you can use on any road, including unfamiliar ones, so you feel prepared for both your test and driving afterwards.
